These include sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, energy efficiency, and renewable energy credits as well. In today's rapidly changing world, emission trading is one method of speeding up change towards a cleaner environment by using market-based incentives whose application is global.

The U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) predicts that increases in generating capacity will be 20,000 MW per year in the U.S., and that global capacity increases will be five times the U.S. number.
