In the depths of winter, on the harrowing Simplon pass connecting Switzerland to Italy 6,578 feet above sea level, Volkswagen (VW) successfully completed long-range testing of its new HY.POWER fuel cell Bora (Jetta) prototype. The goal was to see whether VW’s new HY.POWER technology could withstand strenuous demands at sub-zero temperatures, which are the major setbacks for cold-combustion hydrogen fuel cells. So far, so good.

A Canadian company has been receiving a lot of buzz about a recent announcement regarding its new electric car. Motive Industries Inc., a “full vehicle development firm focused on advanced materials, technology and innovation to create real world transportation” is developing Canada’s first bio-composite bodied electric car made from hemp. Material from hemp stock, grown in Canada, will be used in the body of the electric vehicle, the Kestrel.

It appears the business community is closer to having standards set up for reporting greenhouse gas emissions, as more than 60 global firms have finished testing new a new technique for reporting emissions. 62 businesses from 17 countries, including 3M, IKEA, and PepsiCo. tested standards developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

Whiskey, the much loved alcoholic beverage, may become a major source of biofuel production in the near future. Scientists at Edinburgh Napier University have developed a method of producing biofuel from the two main by-products of whiskey distillation: “pot ale,” the liquid from the copper stills, and “draff,” the spent grains.

The Japan Post Service will soon be delivering mail in converted electric vehicles. Japan Post Service Co. has secured an order to purchase 1,030 electric vehicles from Japan-based Zerosports Co., Ltd. for its mail delivery and collection service. The Zero EVs are actually converted from gas-driven Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. commercial vehicles.

Although Vestas’ big second-quarter losses might point to the contrary, investor confidence in the cleantech sector is bullish. A report, compiled by IMAP, a global network of merger and acquisition advisory firms, shows that the number of mergers and acquisitions in the alternative energy sectors rose 54% last year. IMAP’s research shows that mergers and acquisitions in renewable energy’s three major sectors — solar power, wind energy, and biofuels — was worth US$20.4 billion last year.

BP is still carrying out its preparations for drilling a deepwater well offshore Libya in the Mediterranean despite calls from the Italian government for a drilling moratorium following the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Italian environment minister Stefania Prestigiacomo told the Financial Times that the Mediterranean’s 21 littoral states should find a “common voice” and implement a drilling moratorium.
