In the depths of winter, on the harrowing Simplon pass connecting Switzerland to Italy 6,578 feet above sea level, Volkswagen (VW) successfully completed long-range testing of its new HY.POWER fuel cell Bora (Jetta) prototype. The goal was to see whether VW’s new HY.POWER technology could withstand strenuous demands at sub-zero temperatures, which are the major setbacks for cold-combustion hydrogen fuel cells. So far, so good.

Although Vestas’ big second-quarter losses might point to the contrary, investor confidence in the cleantech sector is bullish. A report, compiled by IMAP, a global network of merger and acquisition advisory firms, shows that the number of mergers and acquisitions in the alternative energy sectors rose 54% last year. IMAP’s research shows that mergers and acquisitions in renewable energy’s three major sectors — solar power, wind energy, and biofuels — was worth US$20.4 billion last year.

Google threw its considerable weight behind California’s landmark climate change law this week, when it hosted an event where it argued an upcoming measure to kill the law would derail past and future gains made in cleantech job growth. Google hosted the event with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, featuring California Air Resources Board chairwoman Mary Nichols, venture capitalist guru Vinod Khosla, Google Green Energy Czar Bill Weihl, and PG&E senior vice president Tom Bottorff, who discussed the negative implications from Proposition 23, which would derail the state’s climate law, also known as AB 32.

New U.S. claims for jobless benefits fell to their lowest level in two months, offering cautious hope for an economic recovery that had shown signs of fatigue. Investors jumped on the double-dip bandwagon, but we don’t really see it,” said Alan Lancz, president at Alan B. Lancz & Associates in Toledo, Ohio.

New Technology - Technological change has been a major feature of energy markets since the 1970s oil crises. Dire predictions about the rapid depletion of moderately priced oil supplies were commonplace then. But in the intervening years, despite a rapidly expanding global economy, such prognostications have proven false. Instead, over the last three decades, technological advances in drilling and exploration have contributed to a significant expansion of conventional hydrocarbon production available from oil and gas fields located outside the Persian Gulf. This technological progress has dramatically lowered the cost for finding and producing oil and natural gas and provided energy consumers with ample, inexpensive supplies at a time in which earlier forecasts had predicted shortages.

Recently, friends and new college graduates have been asking me how they can get into the field of sustainability. When the question has arisen, I have found myself wondering where the green jobs are sprouting. Then, yesterday, I came across a post listing the top 10 cities for green jobs.
