Scientists Create Safe Operating Space
According to a group of 28 internationally famed scientists, new techniques and ideas are needed to help mankind come to terms with global climate change and also to fight this global menace that we are faced with along with other environmental problems that have become the way of life in the 21st century. These scientists have suggested that global limits on biophysical space be set up. These biophysical spaces will be distinguished on the basis of the scientific interpretation of the earth system and can be called as a “safe planetary operating space” that will allow mankind to continue to formulate and flourish for many years in the future. This new approach to sustainable evolution has been presented by the scientists in the latest issue of the scientific journal Nature. According to the article in Nature, the authors have already established an initial attempt to discover and quantify a set of nine planetary boundaries. Some of the boundaries that have been established include freshwater utilization, global climate change, biological variety, and aerosol loading.
This research has been performed by a group of scientists at UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), in cooperation with the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University.
An important part of this research is the global project known as IHOPE. The goal of the Integrated History and future Of People on Earth (IHOPE) project is to interpret the fundamental interactions of the environmental and human processes over many years to ascertain how human and biophysical changes have contributed to the Earth’s kinetics. The scientists underline that the fast enlargement of human actions since the technological revolution has now rendered a worldwide geophysical force equal to a few of the great forces of nature.
Planetary limits is a way of believing that will not replace politics, economic science, or ethics, explained environmental historian Sverker Sörlin of the Stockholm Resilience Centre and the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. “But it will help tell all of us where the serious limits are and therefore when it is ethically unfair to allow more discharges of unsafe substances, further reduction of biodiversity, or to continue the corrosion of the resource foundation. It allows for the final guardrails that can help societies to take action politically, economically. Planetary limits should be ascertained both as signals of the need for cautiousness and as an encouragement to innovation and new thinking of how to function safely within these boundaries while at same time assuring human well being for all.”
